Problem
A business analyst team had a testing product they liked, but it was disconnected from the engineering delivery system. Tests were not exercising the right system boundaries, and the development team had no reliable way to use that work inside continuous integration.
My role
As part of an Avanade engagement, I assessed the existing test workflow, integrated the external UAT tooling into Team Foundation Server, and helped establish a broader ALM direction that connected analysts, developers, and QA infrastructure.
Key engineering decisions
- Connected business-authored acceptance tests to TFS so they became part of the engineering feedback loop instead of remaining a disconnected artifact.
- Reframed UAT from a separate business activity into a delivery signal that could participate in continuous integration builds.
- Worked across multiple application groups so the testing approach could expand beyond one team in a highly integrated enterprise system.
- Introduced TFS 2010 Lab Management capabilities to reduce friction in standing up test environments when infrastructure was limited.
Outcome
The engagement moved the client closer to a usable enterprise test automation model, aligned business and engineering testing workflows, and helped justify new host investments for QA environments under TFS Lab Management.
Why This Work Still Matters
The technical stack was earlier-generation Microsoft delivery tooling, but the operating problem is still current: useful reliability signals appear only when testing, automation, and environment management are connected to the actual delivery system.
This engagement shaped how I think about modern platform work: feedback loops must be operationally real, cross-team adoption matters as much as tooling choice, and infrastructure constraints should be addressed as part of delivery design rather than treated as an afterthought.
